Denver's kids need your interest and involvement.
I am running for the Denver School Board because we desperately need a Board that is not dominated by political ideologies, but is guided by clear-eyed, independent, and thoughtful policies that are good for our kids, good for teachers, good for families, and good for our community.
The need for improvement is clear. Proficiency in reading, writing, math, and social studies is below 55 percent and in some grade levels and subjects well below. Our high school graduation rate is still below 60 percent, and the district has failed to close to the achievement gap.
We must reform our schools, but we must ensure those reforms are effective, and many of the current ideas employed by the district are not. We need reform that builds capacity. Capacity building reform embraces the energy and talents of our parents and communities, provides autonomy to our teachers and principals, and recasts the district administrative function as service oriented. Capacity building reform recognizes the synergy of community and school. Capacity building reform is sustainable.
I want to work with northeast Denver to build a future where every parent and child has the chance to proudly choose to attend the school in their neighborhood. When we offer high quality opportunities, I believe that most will choose the school in their community. I am also committed to providing excellent choices for parents to meet the unique talents and needs for their children. There is no greater responsibility for parents and the community than to insure educational opportunity for all our children.
My focus on the Board of Education will be to provide:
- Great schools in every neighborhood,
- Data-informed accountability for district leadership, principals, and teachers, and
- A culture of excellence, trust, respect, and collaboration.
Together we can make every neighborhood school the school of choice!
